Although concepts like keyword density have always been important to Google and other search engines, the implementation of a concept called LSI has made it vital for search engine optimizers to concentrate on the content of a webpage. To better understand why content is important to search engines, it is important to understand how LSI has changed search engine optimization. LSI or Latent Semantic Indexing is an algorithm that calculates the density of keywords in a page’s content. Once the search engine has calculated the keyword density, it then uses the keywords density for generating search results.
Let’s assume that a 500 word web page has the phrase ‘used cars’ appear 20 times in the content. This would mean that the keyword density of the phrase ‘used cars’ is 20/500 * 100 = 4%. The keyword density of each keyword is calculated by Google as mentioned above. In essence, writing ‘used cars’ in a webpage 500 times will not increase the density of the phrase ‘used cars’. The practice of filling pages with irrelevant content just to increase keyword density of targeted keywords is referred to as keyword spamming. To ensure there is no spamming of content; Google requires that all content be meaningful and well written.
Google has various mechanisms that allow detection and elimination of pages that are keyword spamming to achieve higher search engine rankings. In a nut shell, the only way to get high search engine rankings is by creating meaningful and keyword rich web content. The term SEO copywriter is used for an internet copywriter that create search engine friendly content for websites and web pages.
Web content is not the only element that plays a vital role in search engine optimization. Articles and blog entries are also important for search engine optimization. Google and other search engines also take into account the content of pages that are providing incoming links to a page. For example, a used cars website will benefit greatly from an article that provides tips on buying used cars and also has out going link to the used cars website. Google will index not just the incoming link; it will also take into account the keywords that are mentioned in each incoming link.
Content plays such an important role in search engine optimization that web pages with lower PageRankTM actually outperform sites with higher PageRankTM, based solely on their content and optimization. LSI implementation is just the first step in making search results more content sensitive and meaningful. Yahoo and Alexa too have their own versions of Google’s LSI and are constantly finding newer ways to incorporate keyword density and content to deliver more content sensitive results.
Over a period of time, Google has constantly improved its content centric search algorithms and the keyword density parameters have changed. Most SEO copywriters keep themselves abreast of the latest SEO developments to make sure the content they create is search engine friendly.
