After An Affair How To Tell Your Spouse

If you have had an affair or you are currently having an affair you need to come clean. This can be a very scary prospect, especially if you want to stay in the relationship and make it work.

There are a lot of uncertainties that come with admitting to an affair, but this has to be a part of the healing process. You need to gear up to tell your spouse about the affair and be prepared for everything.

The first thing you need to do is pick the right time. You don't want to tell them when you are in the car driving to work, on the phone, or when there are other things going on. You need to choose a time to tell your spouse when you can give your spouse your undivided attention and they can do the same thing. Choosing the right time is important because it will give your spouse the chance to respond to your admission and also give you the chance to explain.

Next, you just need to get it out. So many people try to dress it up a bit or make it sound better than it is. Don't bother with this, it is insulting to the person that you are admitting the affair to. Instead, just tell them, "I want to be honest with you because I love you. I have made a mistake. I cheated on you." When you say it like this it will actually make it easier for you to get the truth out and be understood.

Now comes the reaction. You never know what the reaction is going to be. It may be a mixed reaction such as a mixture of anger and hurt. Your spouse may go from yelling and screaming to crying inconsolably. You need to allow for this expression and not try to limit it. This can be a crushing admission to hear and you have to make them feel safe in expressing how they feel.

Be prepared to deal with the consequences. Your spouse may initially want to work things out and then decide that you need to leave or vice versa. You also cannot expect them to take in the information and move on.

They will likely have a lot of questions that come out for weeks or months. You need to be prepared not to be trusted for some time, if ever. Healing a relationship from an affair can often take months or years, and some are never the same. You need to determine when you make this admission whether or not you are willing to put in the time and effort that it will take to save your relationship.
