Honda was one of the very first manufacturers to build an all terrain vehicle. In 1967, Osamu Takeuchi led a group of Honda engineers to create what would become a sought after recreational and sports vehicle, namely the all terrain vehicle. Their efforts produced the US90 ATV.

Initially, the engineers considered various configurations, from two wheels, to four wheels, and even six wheels with a variety of other components. After many design hours, the engineers settled on a vehicle with three wheels because it provided them with a configuration that was best suited for the vehicle as they saw it.

The US90 was the first Honda ATV in world. It featured seven horsepower through a dual range, 4-speed gearbox and automatic clutch at around six hundred dollars per vehicle. This 1970 model was mainly used by farmers because of its fat tire and capability of riding through sand and snow. It didn't take long before people were starting to use this ATV for pure recreation.

At the start of 1980s, both utility and sports ATV had a major boom in the market. More and more farmers were also using the models designed for work purposes. The 1980s were dominated by the Honda ATC185, a powerful ATV with an automatic clutch, five speed gearbox, and a 180cc engine.

Honda was quick to adapt to the needs of the ATV sports users and in 1982 brought out the ATC200E. This was an awesome ATV for its time with a 192cc engine, and dual range 4 speed gearbox, that kicked out far more power than the farmer ATV variety. This exact model was enhanced with a reverse gear and new drive chain for added durability in 1984.

Wherever you go, since the 1980s you can find a Honda ATV in races in the deserts and snow covered landscapes around the globe. Honda ATVs hold their own in terms of performance when compared with Honda's track record of high performance motorcycles and automobiles.

After the success of three-wheel utility and sports ATV models, Honda as well as other manufacturers of all-terrain vehicles discontinued the production of three-wheel ATVs. They released a better version in four-wheel, allowing better suspension and a more powerful engine.

Honda ATVs are known to revolutionize the world of all-terrain vehicles for both sports and utility purposes. There are many Honda ATV models to suit the different tastes and needs of different consumers.
