The record of hypnosis is as timeworn as the human nation. Even the most crude natives were aware of this astounding psychological demonstration, and it was used in the mystical celebrations of their wizards to produce terror and intensify trust in the paranormal and the occult. With this long-lasting story of occult and mysticism, it is not shocking that the general public position toward hypnosis has been and still is one of hostility, confusion and fear.

The first scientific presentations in the consideration of hypnosis began with Anton Mesmer in 1775, from whose name originates the phrase mesmerism which is still in frequent use. Mesmer`s utilization of hypnosis commenced with his invention that particular categories of medical patients reacted to arm stroking and sleep suggestions. Mesmer connected these remedial aftereffects to the `quality` of `animal magnetism`, and he came up with a supposition that animal magnetism was some strange and peculiar cosmic fluid with remedial properties.

Notwithstanding Mesmer`s excellent instinctive knowledge of clinical psychology, he had no distinct awareness of the psychological constitution of his therapy. Even so, he cared for a large number of patients effectively on whom old-style medical procedures had failed. Regrettably, his radical behavior and strange character of his therapy brought him unjustifiably to discredit despite the fact that numerous physicians often visited his clinic in the course of the heyday of his accomplishment to learn the most important lessons in the unknown art of psychotherapy, specifically, the magnitude of clinical psychology.

Since Mesmer there has been a succession of outstanding men who got interested in hypnosis and exploited it with success in medical procedures, granting it an gradually more scientific justification and weight. Elliotson, the first man in England to apply the stethoscope, became interested in hypnosis about 1817, utilized it substantially, and left outstanding evidence of its beneficial efficiency in selected cases. Esdaille, stimulated by Elliotson`s case reports, became an passionate advocate of mesmerism, as it was then called,
and actually succeeded in interesting the British government in constructing a hospital in
India, where he used it intensely on all types of medical patients, leaving countless tremendous manuscripts of major and minor surgery accomplished under hypnotic anesthesia.

The initiation of a psychological appreciation of the phenomenon began in 1841 with James Braid, primarily an opponent and then afterwards a most devoted inquirer and supporter. It was he who composed the expression hypnosis, determinated the psychological framework of hypnotic sleep, and distinguished many of its manifestations, constructing methods whereby to assess their strength.
