Have you ever noticed that brown color on the pages of your books? This discolor can be caused by the gases from smoke. It can also come from the soot that your old furnace happens to spit out or a fireplace. Over time all of the smoke and moisture in the air of your home can make this happen. All of these things like water, fire, smoke, steam, moisture, and dust can all do major damage to your papers and your books. If you have a lot of books, keep them away from places that this moisture could come from, like the fireplace, kitchen, or bathroom where you know there is sometimes a lot of smoke or moisture.

If you happen to go to a yard sale and find books that have warped covers and pages, this could have been from the heat of a fire or the heavy moisture that had built-up in the building that they had them stored in. Libraries usually try to keep their temperatures the same all of the time, not too hot and not too cool. A constant steady temperature protects paper more from humidity or condensation.

If any smoke happens to seep into the areas where these books are at it will really cause you more trouble. This smoke follows a pattern. It will go up to the ceilings in a building where the air is cool. It travels easily through your venting systems and even your plumbing. There are three types of smoke and they are wet, dry, and fuel oil soot and all of these can attack your books. Some of them might take longer to damage these books, but in the end they all will.

If you have old rare books you will want to have them covered at all times as this will prevent them from this damage. If they happen to receive some of this damage you will have to find a professional company that can help you save them. A document drying company can help to restore books that have been damaged by water, smoke, or fire. They will use certain chemicals to do this job and even tell you what you will need to do so this does not happen again. If you have a large number of books or paper items. That have gotten wet, they can sometimes restore them in the building where they are, but when they need to be cleaned, they will usually remove them to their own restoration facility.
