Restoring a home to the previous state before a fire is a daunting task. If done alone, it may take a very long time and you will surely feel discouraged. One way around it is to use family members to help in the fire damage restoration. There is always a job for everyone no matter their age. The type of damage we are referring to is minor damage. Not the kind of damage that results in a completely burnt down house.

Starting with the children, there are some things that they can do to help out. If the child is able to clean his room, then he could be counted on to help clean up after a fire. Sturdy gloves can be given if he is going to clean up some charred debris. Light items such as papers, books, or anything that is small and there is no chance of recovering them, may be disposed of by the kids in the family. Set a trash can in the middle of the room to make the process easier. Remember that children do need to take frequent breaks so that they do not lose interest throughout the course of the day. Make the cleaning a fun game. If you have more than one child who is able to clean, give them their own trash bin and see who can get the most by the end of the day. The one with the most gets to choose where you go for dinner that night, since chances are the kitchen is undergoing fire damage restoration itself.

Teens can help out more with fire damage restoration than the little ones. They will enjoy destruction very much and will probably be rather good at it too. If there are flooring, tiles, windows, parts of walls that need to be taken out to be replaced, give this job to them. Make sure that when this type of work is going on, protective eyewear should be used by anyone in the general area. The last thing you need is a trip to the ER while trying to do some fire damage restoration.

Adults can obviously do just about anything that they feel comfortable with doing. If there is something that just doesn't feel safe for either yourself or another, try to leave that to a professional in the field for issues of safety.

Everyone should be able to help out with things like painting, cleaning, sweeping, scrubbing, replanting, digging and anything else easy. It is important to remember that fire damage restoration will take some time depending on how much damage was done in the first place. Don't get discouraged when things are not going as planned.

The family that can deal with a daunting task such as fire damage restoration together can surely get through just about any problem that may come its way. Keep the family members on track, don't be afraid to ask for help, and remember to keep your patience with them. Everyone has just gone through a devastating event in their life and emotions will be flying around wildly. After all the fire damage restoration is completed, the family will be a tighter unit just for the simple fact that everyone has been through a traumatic experience and survived together.
