If your nails have gone hard and colorless, oral terbinafine should be given daily. In case of toes for about 12 weeks and in case of finger nails for 6 weeks.
A word of caution : if it does not respond to home remedy, doctors help is recommended. Physicians normally put you on stronger medication or antibiotics after initial diagnosis. Sometimes a corticosteroid cream may be prescribed.
It is important not to touch or scratch the infected area and to change into fresh clothes daily. Keep the skin clean and dry at all times. Sleep on clean sheets. In case of kids exclude them from school to avoid spreading.
