Clinical depression is a condition caused by chemical imbalances in the brain that make someone constantly feel aloof, sad, negative, and unmotivated. It can last for days, weeks, months, or even years. It can be triggered by stress, certain situations, or nothing at all. Depression can affect people of all ages, including teenagers and young children.

Young people often suffer from depression, which leaves families with lots of questions such as: why does it happen, and what can they do for their child? Fortunately, depression is treatable and some of the most effective depression therapies come in the form of Neuro-Linguistic Programming techniques.

In the past, it was believed that adolescents could not have depression, but the truth is depression affects people of all ages. Often, depression in young people is triggered by events such as changing schools, a relationship breakup, illness, a loss in the family, or abuse. In some people, depression has no external cause. Depression can be genetic, meaning mothers and fathers with depression are more likely to have kids who suffer from depression.

There are many different forms of depression. Most adolescents with depression have a type of major depression. This type obstructs a person's ability to enjoy life and engage in normal activities. Some people may also suffer from a milder type of depression called Dysthymia, which is a long-term type of depression with milder symptoms than major depression. A rarer but still common type of depression is manic-depression (bipolar disorder), which is characterized by mood swings from extreme sadness to extreme happiness.

Depression can be a problem for adolescents because their symptoms vary slightly from the ones adults often have, making it more difficult to identify and treat. Often, children with depression will not seem sad or "depressed" as one would expect in adults. Constant irritability is usually one of the biggest signs of depression in children and teens. Signs of depression may not be obvious, but may include constant sadness, difficulty sleeping, exhaustion, and decreased interest in activities.

Children with depression may do poorly in school, have trouble making friends, or get in trouble by "acting up," a cry for attention. The effects are also evident for teens, who may try drugs and alcohol to escape their overwhelming depression. Depressive disorder is not the sufferer's fault, but those with depression do have the power to seek treatment and find out how to successfully cope with their condition.

Depression help treatments can range from therapy and counseling, to the use of antidepressant drugs. Group therapy can be helpful for teenagers and older children by providing a safe place to share their feelings with their peers. Online services such as forums for teen depression can also provide a source of information for teen depression and serve as a type of group therapy for the depressed.

Behavioral counseling can help teach people of all ages how to manage their depression. Therapy can help parents understand what causes depression. Family counseling helps educate families on depressive disorders and what they can do to show their support.

In some cases, antidepressant medications are prescribed. This is only done under the careful supervision of a physician who will monitor the child's health and mental state. Even though people with severe depression may need to take antidepressants, these drugs can have many side effects, especially in young people, who are still developing. This is why psychological counseling, understanding and support from families and professional counselors, and the use of techniques that help children learn how to cope with their own depression are considered better for helping children with depression.

Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) techniques can be used to treat stress, anxiety, and depression. They help people come up with safe and constructive coping strategies for reducing depression. It works for all people because it is safe, doesn't require the use of any drugs, and is an effective form of self-help therapy.

One NLP technique used to fight depression is known as the NLP Flash. This technique trains your mind to use the feelings that create stress and depression as triggers for thoughts that eliminate depression instead. It is a technique that even young people can learn to use to help them manage their depression.

People who are diagnosed with depression need not suffer. Therapeutic techniques and treatments can help depressed people of all ages find relief. NLP techniques are wonderful for helping adolescents and their families handle stress and depression. These techniques can diminish or even eliminate depression in people of all ages.
