If a person encounters some or most of the following things, lack of ability to focus, bad breath, allergies, inability to defecate at least once a day, drinks less that 4 glasses of water a day, lack of energy, has unpleasant odors coming from body parts, bloats easily after eating, takes more than two servings of meat a day, takes less than a cup of vegetables daily. Then he or she is a very good candidate for a detox diet.

But what exactly is a detox diet? This has been featured in various talk shows, including Oprah, but what does it really mean to undergo a detox diet?

To detoxify was initially the part where an alcoholic or a drug dependent weans from his or her chosen vice. Now, the word detox is used for diets that will flush out the users' toxins through the introduction of detoxifying agents, may they be food, supplements or drinks.

There are several types of detox diets out there that are used by men and women all over the world but generally, a detox diet is a diet that will cut down your intake of chemicals in your food dramatically. This means that if the person who will undergo detox diet used to drink carbonated drinks like there is not tomorrow, then he or she would now have to drink water. It is also a diet that will highly promote food items that are high in vitamins, nutrients, antioxidants and fiber. Fiber and water will be the two most used ingredients in a detox diet as these two are very beneficial in cleaning out your digestive system.

Advantages of the Detox Diet

A detox diet is aimed at clearing out the toxins that accumulated in the body through the fatty tissues. These toxins may have been captured through the air, water or food. These toxins are said to lead to fatigue, bad odor and pasty skin among others. These toxins are also said to result to loss of concentration. So if a detox diet is done, the user is said to rectify these bad effects on the body.

Through detoxifying, the user of the diet is said to feel more energy, have a better bowel movement and would have an overall better health standing. Also, most overweight people who undergo this diet also have a positive weight loss effect as fat intake and calorie intake is reduced.

Disadvantages of the Detox Diet

Most people who have bad reaction to detoxifying diets are those who fail to consult their medical practitioner before trying. In any case, the most common side effect of the detox diet is that those who are used to having coffee would most likely experience withdrawal symptoms. Other side effects include irritability, hunger, dizziness, drastic weight loss and diarrhea. For those who experience these, it is best that one takes a break from the diet and consults a nutritionist first.

Warning: Pregnant women should not go on a detox diet.
