Heart Damage Of Another Kind
As parents we all know that the dreaded day will come when we have to let our children go. They leave home to make their own way and if we have done our job well they will be prepared to meet the challenges that life has in store for them. When they are ready to leave and walk out our door as a dependant child for the last time, our minds become flooded with little things that we can not remember if we warned them about. In a rush you will want to make sure that you impart all the knowledge you want them to have. Some parents can let go with a smile on their face, but usually their heart is breaking on the inside.
It is unrealistic for parents to think that their job is over just because a grown child moves away from home. Since their adult life is just beginning, you will want to know that they will still come to you when they are hurt or have problems that they do not know how to deal with on their own. Sometimes they are not quite as grown up as they think they are. As much as you want to protect them, there are things in life that one has to experience for ones self in order to mature.
Having a good relationship with your child while they are growing up will help keep the lines of communication open and instill in them the knowledge that you will always be there for them no matter what. Nothing is scarier for a young adult than to feel they need help or advice and have no where to turn. Just when they think they know all they need to know and have everything under control, life can throw them a curve like a failed relationship or job loss and leave them adrift emotionally or financially.
While you can not always solve these sorts of problems for them, at least they will know they can still come home if need be. It is like having a parachute they know is there just in case. It is also hard to sometimes just sit back and watch them when we know they are making some mistake, but sometimes that is all you can do.
Even though we have to let go and this makes them happy, it will always make the parent sad. Just take heart in knowing that you did all you could to prepare them for the road ahead and make sure they know you are there to help whenever the bumps come along.
